iFLEX has contributed to two publications on citizen and user engagement, one as part of the collaboration with “sister” projects, which are projects funded within the same topic: Consumer engagement and demand response. The other as part of the BRIDGE Initiative, where iFLEX is co-leading the subgroup on Smart Tools.
The sister-project publication is an open letter, summarising the discussions held in a workshop on user engagement at the conference Sustainable Places in September 2022, in which the projects ACCEPT, HESTIA, SENDER and ReDREAM participated together with iFLEX.
The projects discussed the lessons learnt in the recruitment and early engagement phase of the pilot sites. The paper summarises the strategies, methods, challenges and best practices presented by the projects with the aim to make these experiences publicly available for anyone with an interest in using the knowledge gained.
The second publication is a report on the research and work performed in 2021 within the BRIDGE working group on consumer & citizen engagement and its four subgroups: Socio-economic drivers and indicators of engagement; strategies of engagement; governance models for collective action and smart tools for engagement.
Based on the work performed, the working group presents its conclusions and recommendations for future focus and work. The recommendations include: Recognising design-driven approaches; using non-technical indicators for consumer engagement and community value; agreeing on a common language and definitions (such as co-creation) and sharing ownership with the users engaged.
